Craig's Linux Notes: Installed Gentoo Packages

This is a list of software I installed on my Gentoo system. Most are from packages. Exceptions are noted. These notes detail the package name and configuration details, and how well each works. Version numbers are not tracked, except when problems are noted. For manually installed software, build instructions are detailed.

	lsof	Lists currently open files and owning processes.

	vixie-cron	Scheduled task manager
sys-boot	grub	System boot loader. Required.
sys-devel	prelink	Library prelinking tools. Improves app load times.
sys-fs	dd-rhelp	Never-gives-up media copy utility.
	lvm2	Logical Volume Manager utilities
sys-kernel	vanilla-sources	Source code for kernel. Now on version 2.6.
x11-base	x11-drm	Direct Rendering Manager. Speeds up games.
	xfree	X Server. Required for any graphics at all.
x11-misc	efax-gtk	GUI for efax. version >= 2.2.5a
	numlockx	Sets keyboard NumLock on starting X.
x11-wm	compiz	Window manager with fancy display tricks.

Kernel Modules

These must be listed in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6. Also see Gentoo Kernel: Configuration.

ata_piix	For libata -- required at boot time to access all LVM volumes.
i2c-i801	For lm_sensors.
i2c-isa	For lm_sensors.
w83627hf	For lm_sensors.
8139too	Ethernet card driver.
8250	Serial port driver.
cx8800	Video4linux/radio support.
uhci_hcd ehci_hcd	For USB. Apparently, I have two types of USB controllers (as revealed by "lspci").
usblp	For USB printer.

Module Configuration

These must be listed somewhere in /etc/modules.d. All files in /etc/modules.d are compiled together by modules-update and inserted into /etc/modules.conf. Don't change /etc/modules.conf.
